Sustainable Marine Coating Innovations at Posidonia 2026
At Posidonia 2026, PPG and its long-standing representative in Greece, Aegean Protective Coatings S.A., highlighted the evolving role of marine coatings in improving vessel performance, operational efficiency and environmental sustainability. Under the theme “Reach New Horizons of Sustainability and Performance,” the companies presented a comprehensive 360-degree approach to marine coatings at Stand 3.104, showcasing a portfolio of solutions ranging from low-friction hull coatings and electrostatic application technology to advanced digital tools.
Among the key innovations presented was PPG’s electrostatic application technology, an advanced process designed to improve the efficiency of marine hull coating application while reducing material waste and supporting more sustainable shipyard operations. Building on expertise developed across the automotive and aerospace industries, PPG has adapted electrostatic spray technology for the marine sector and developed compatible fouling-control coatings, enabling shipyards and owners to benefit from greater productivity without fundamentally changing existing workflows.
The technology and its wider implications for the maritime industry are explored in PPG’s newly published white paper, “Electrostatic Application of Marine Hull Coatings.” The publication examines the development and operating principles of electrostatic spray technology, its practical advantages for shipyards and ship owners, and the contribution of hull coatings to vessel efficiency and the International Maritime Organization’s decarbonization objectives.
“Electrostatic application is a breakthrough process innovation that, combined with our chemistry innovation, delivers improved productivity and sustainability for our shipyard customers,” said Jan Willem Tegelaar, PPG Global Platform Director, Marine Coatings. “It has already revolutionized the automotive and aerospace industries; building on this cross-industry expertise, we have adapted the technology and developed compatible fouling control coatings to save time and reduce waste without disrupting existing workflows for marine vessels.”
The focus on innovation and sustainability continued beyond the exhibition floor, with Aegean Protective Coatings S.A. and PPG jointly hosting an exclusive reception at Golf Prive in Glyfada during Posidonia 2026. Hosted by Aegean’s founder, Capt. Pantelis D. Monogioudis, together with his children, company Directors Anna-Maria, Dimitris and John, as well as a high-level PPG delegation led by Mrs. Amy Ericson, PPG Senior Vice President of Protective and Marine Coatings, and Mr. J. W. Tegelaar, General Manager of PMC EMEA and Global Platform Director, Marine Coatings.
The reception brought together approximately 500 senior executives and prominent representatives of the Greek and international shipping community, creating an important forum for dialogue on the future of sustainable shipping. The evening provided an opportunity for guests to exchange views with executives from PPG and Aegean on the changing demands facing the maritime sector and the importance of combining technological innovation with practical solutions that deliver measurable gains in vessel performance and efficiency.
A central theme of the discussions was the value of continued collaboration between the Greek maritime community and global suppliers of advanced technologies. As the industry navigates increasingly demanding environmental and operational requirements, partnerships of this kind are becoming increasingly important in developing a more resilient, efficient and sustainable maritime ecosystem.
The commitment to sustainability was also reflected in the organization of the reception itself. PPG and Aegean Protective Coatings partnered with Golf Prive and the non-profit organization Boroume to donate all remaining food from the event to people and communities in need.
Through their joint participation at Posidonia, PPG and Aegean Protective Coatings demonstrated how advances in coating technology can contribute to the maritime industry’s broader transition toward greater efficiency and sustainability. From innovative hull coatings and smarter application methods to digital solutions and responsible practices, their approach reflects a growing industry focus on achieving both performance and environmental progress.
